Our Mission

The purpose of the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association at Western Michigan University is to assist members to reach competency levels provided by the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, to fundraise for the annual conference, and to provide future nonprofit leaders with contacts and resources that will help them in their future careers.

The young men you see in the picture will always be known by the 2014 Spring Seminar in Nonprofit Leadership as “Abby’s boys”. These young men are part of a program sponsored by the Community Healing Center called Street After School. Abby Wallace, the incoming 2014-2015 Western Student Association President and a member of the 2014 Spring Seminar in Nonprofit Leadership, was assigned to review and make a recommendation to the class about their proposal. She thoroughly read the proposal, asked tough questions of Charlene Taylor, the program director, conducted a site visit, met the young men, and staunchly advocated for their program. To the point that one student retorted, “Abby, you’re advocating. You’re not supposed to advocate, only tell us the facts.” She could not resist and the class granted $4,000 to Abby’s Boys, which utilizes a current best practice model indicating delinquent youth should be treated as survivors of post-traumatic stress disorder rather than as criminals.
